Technical note

How ASC and IGS differ in practice

Geospatial coordinates are absolute positions on the earth, and they are large: a projected easting runs to six or seven digits, while latitude and longitude are small decimals. IGS expects a drawing laid out near its own origin in millimetres or inches. The geometry itself converts correctly, but it can land tens of kilometres from 0,0, or arrive at a scale where an entire county is forty units across. Zoom to extents first, then measure one known distance before dimensioning anything. A ASC file has a pixel count and a DPI value, and no real-world size at all. IGS is a drawing where one unit means one millimetre or one inch, so the conversion has to assign a scale. Set the DPI before the run rather than resizing afterwards, then measure one feature of known length in the output and scale the drawing once to match it. Everything downstream, from dimensioning to cutting, rests on that single check.
