What are DIM files?
DIMAP (SPOT Digital Image MAP) is a product description standard for optical satellite imagery of the SPOT and Pléiades series, in which a human-readable XML file with the .dim extension controls how companion raster files are read. The XML tree contains sections for the dataset identification, coordinate reference system, raster dimensions and tiling, band information, data access, and production and processing history. The raster data are stored as 8-bit or 16-bit unsigned integers in GeoTIFF or JPEG 2000 files, split into tiles for large scenes, while rational polynomial coefficients for orthorectification are usually supplied in a separate XML file. Per-band gain and bias values convert digital numbers into radiance or reflectance, and solar irradiance and acquisition angles support atmospheric and illumination corrections. Conversion to graphics starts by parsing the XML to find the image files, reassemble the tiles, and identify the band order, for example blue, green, red, and near-infrared in SPOT 6 and 7. Three bands are then mapped to the red, green, and blue channels for a true-color or false-color picture, with a percentile stretch to 8 bits for PNG or JPEG, while GeoTIFF preserves the full radiometric range.
