Technical note

DT0 to PPM: what carries over and what does not

Every cell in a DT0 file holds a measurement rather than a colour, usually elevation in metres, running from sea level up to whatever the highest point in the tile happens to be. PPM stores brightness, so the conversion stretches that range across a grey or colour scale. What you get is a readable picture of the terrain, and it is the right thing for a relief map or a figure. What you no longer have is the data: sampling a pixel in the PPM returns a shade, not an altitude. Missing cells in an elevation grid, such as water, radar shadow or the edge of a survey, are not empty: they hold a sentinel value, -32768 in SRTM, -32767 in DTED and very often -9999 in ESRI grids. Counted as a real height, that value stretches the scale so far that the actual terrain collapses into a few near-identical shades. When a PPM output looks flat and washed out, a void treated as data is the usual cause.

DT0 to PPM Conversion

What are DT0 files?

DT0 is the file extension for Level 0 of Digital Terrain Elevation Data (DTED), a gridded elevation product defined by the U.S. National Imagery and Mapping Agency, now the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), in the MIL-PRF-89020 specification. A file of this type covers one degree of latitude by one degree of longitude and holds elevation values at a post spacing of 30 arc-seconds, which corresponds to roughly one kilometer on the ground. Higher levels of the same series use the .dt1 and .dt2 extensions, with spacings of 3 and 1 arc-seconds. Each file starts with header records that describe the cell origin, the data set identification, and the accuracy of the data, followed by the elevation grid. DTED is widely used in military, aviation, and civil mapping applications, and Level 0 data is publicly available.

What are PPM files?

PPM or Portable Pixelmap files are image files included in Netpbm, an open source graphics program. The other widely used Netpbm formats are PGM (Portable Graymap) and PBM (Portable Bitmap). All three are image formats and are sometimes called collectively PNMs (Portable Anymap format). While PGMs contains grayscale images, PPMs include color images and they represent intermediary files used in the conversion of less known formats using the Portable Bitmap Utilities. PPM files are mostly operated on UNIX and Intel-based platforms.
