What are DT0 files?
DT0 (DTED Level 0 Elevation Raster) is a binary elevation grid format specified by MIL-PRF-89020 for one-degree geographic cells with a 30 arc-second post spacing. The file opens with three fixed-size header records: a 80-byte User Header Label starting with the "UHL" tag, which holds the southwest corner, the longitude and latitude intervals, the vertical accuracy, and the number of columns and rows; a 648-byte Data Set Identification record with the "DSI" tag; and a 2700-byte Accuracy Description record with the "ACC" tag. The elevation grid follows as one data record per meridian column, written from west to east, with each column running from south to north. A column record begins with the sentinel byte 0xAA, a block counter, and the longitude and latitude counts, and ends with a four-byte checksum. All values are big-endian 16-bit integers in sign-magnitude form rather than two's complement, so negative heights need explicit conversion, and the void value is -32767. The longitude interval widens with latitude, so the column count varies by zone. Conversion to graphics requires decoding the sign-magnitude samples, transposing the column order into image rows, masking voids, and rescaling heights to an 8-bit or 16-bit grayscale heightmap, a color ramp, or shaded relief in PNG, JPEG, or TIFF, while GeoTIFF preserves elevations and georeferencing.
