Technical note

Before you convert DWG to SHP

A DWG drawing measures from an arbitrary origin and carries no coordinate reference system, so the SHP output arrives with correct geometry and no place on the earth. Defining the projection and georeferencing the result against known control points is a step that happens in the GIS afterwards. The conversion cannot infer it, because the information was never in the drawing. A shapefile is not a single file. It is a set: .shp for the geometry, .shx for the index, .dbf for the attribute table and .prj for the projection, and every piece has to travel with the others or the layer will not open. Two limits also apply on the way in. Attribute field names are truncated to ten characters, and one shapefile holds one geometry type, so mixed points, lines and polygons are written out separately.
