What are E00 files?
E00 is the interchange format of Arc/Info, the professional GIS of Esri that was widely used from the 1980s. A map layer in Arc/Info consists of several files and tables in a special directory structure, which could not be copied easily from one computer system to another. The export command packs the whole layer into a single text file, which keeps every number as plain characters and so can be moved between machines of any type. A file of this type can hold a coverage of lines, points, and polygons with their attribute tables, and also a grid or a TIN surface. Many GIS programs can still import such files, and a large amount of older public map data, from geological surveys to national mapping agencies, is distributed this way.
What are PPM files?
PPM or Portable Pixelmap files are image files included in Netpbm, an open source graphics program. The other widely used Netpbm formats are PGM (Portable Graymap) and PBM (Portable Bitmap). All three are image formats and are sometimes called collectively PNMs (Portable Anymap format). While PGMs contains grayscale images, PPMs include color images and they represent intermediary files used in the conversion of less known formats using the Portable Bitmap Utilities. PPM files are mostly operated on UNIX and Intel-based platforms.
