E57 (ASTM E57 3D file format, image part) is a container that keeps laser scan data together with the photographs taken at the same scan stations. The image part holds 2D pictures that accompany the point clouds, such as panoramas, flat camera shots, and cylindrical views. Each picture is saved as a regular JPEG or PNG block inside the file, and an optional mask marks which pixels carry valid data. An XML section describes every image: its size, camera type, position, and orientation in the scanner's coordinate system. Because the images are ordinary compressed pictures, they can be extracted without decoding the point data.
