E57 to WEBP: what to expect from the conversion

E57 is a laser scan. The bulk of the file is a 3D point cloud, often hundreds of millions of measured points with position and intensity, and alongside them it can store the panoramic photographs taken by the scanner's camera. Converting to WEBP extracts those photographs. The points themselves are not part of the output, so a scan saved without embedded images has nothing to convert. E57 and WEBP both compress by discarding data, so this is a re-encode rather than a copy. The output is built from already-compressed pixels, and the artefacts of the first encode are carried into the second. Use a high quality setting, and convert from the original whenever you still have it.
