What are ERR files?
ERR is a file that accompanies Canadian geoid models published by the Canadian Geodetic Survey of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). While a geoid file stores the height of the geoid above the reference ellipsoid, a file of this type stores the estimated uncertainty of those heights for the same area. It uses the BYN structure, with an 80-byte header and a regular grid of whole numbers, and normally shares its name with the geoid file it describes, for example CGG2013n83.err next to CGG2013n83.byn. Surveyors and geodesists use such grids to judge how reliable a height conversion from GNSS measurements is in a given location. The values are small, because they express the expected error of the model rather than a height.
What are PGM files?
The PGM or Portable Graymap format is part of a package of open source graphics programs called Netpbm. Other Netpbm formats include PPM (Portable Pixmap) and PBM (Portable Bitmap), also known under the collective name of PNM (Portable Anymap). A PGM file includes a grayscale image, can work on a UNIX platform, as well as on Windows or Mac OS X, and can render a scope of up to 255 grayscale colors.
