What are ERR files?
ERR (Natural Resources Canada Geoid) is a file with the error estimates of a Canadian geoid model, stored in the same binary layout as the BYN format. It begins with an 80-byte header, followed by a grid of whole numbers. A data type field in the header is set to 1 (error estimates) or 3 (velocity error estimates), which is how a program tells such a file from an ordinary geoid grid. The header also gives the grid boundaries and spacing in arc-seconds, the size of each value (2 or 4 bytes), and a scale factor. Values are written row by row, starting from the north, and from west to east within each row, so the file size is 80 bytes plus rows times columns times the value size. Cells without data are marked with 32767 in 2-byte files and with 9999 multiplied by the scale factor in 4-byte files. To convert the grid to graphics, divide the stored numbers by the scale factor, leave empty cells transparent, and map the small error values to a gray or color scale, where brighter tones show less reliable areas.
