A dataset of this type consists of two files: a plain-text header with the .ers extension and a binary data file with the same base name and no extension. The header describes the data in a structured, readable form, including the number of lines, cells, and bands, the data type of the pixels, the cell size, the byte order, and the coordinate system. The data file stores the pixel values themselves, without compression. The format is used for satellite and aerial imagery, geophysical grids, and elevation models, particularly in mining, exploration, and remote sensing, and it is recognized by many mapping and geoscience programs.
What are PPM files?

While PGMs contains grayscale images, PPMs include color images and they represent intermediary files used in the conversion of less known formats using the Portable Bitmap Utilities.
