What are ERS files?
ERS (ER Mapper Raster) is a pair of files in which an ASCII header describes a raw binary raster stored next to it. The header is organized in nested blocks that start with Begin and end with End, inside a DatasetHeader block. Two blocks are required: CoordinateSpace, which gives the datum, projection, and coordinate type, and RasterInfo, which gives the cell type, cell size, number of lines, cells per line, and number of bands, with a name for each band. The header also states the byte order (MSBFirst or LSBFirst), an optional null value for empty cells, and the registration point that ties the grid to real coordinates. The data file holds the pixels in band-interleaved-by-line order, and the header can also point to another file, such as a TIFF, through the DataFile field. To convert to graphics, a program reads the header first, then the data, applies the byte order and cell type, and masks null cells. One band becomes a grayscale or color-ramped image, and three bands form an RGB picture, which can be saved as PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or GeoTIFF. Both files must stay together.
