Questions & Answers
GEN files: Frequently Asked Questions
What are GEN files?
GEN (ADRG General Information File) is the main entry point of an ARC Digitized Raster Graphics dataset, a military format for scanned maps and charts. The format follows the ISO 8211 standard, in which an ASCII description of the data is followed by binary content. The .gen file carries the image parameters and support data and lists the names of the .img files, which hold the pixels of each zone distribution rectangle, while the optional .thf transmittal header file describes the whole delivery and can reference more than one image. Datasets are divided into Distribution Rectangles and use the ARC projection, which splits the earth into 18 latitude zones, so each zone has its own geometry and image file. The images are color pictures with 8 bits per channel for red, green, and blue. To convert to graphics, a program reads the .gen file first, then loads the matching .img files, assembles the image, and assigns the coordinates from the zone parameters. The result can be saved as PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or GeoTIFF. Extra images with legends and insets from the paper chart may also be present. Supported by FME, Manifold GIS, and LuciadLightspeed.
