Questions & Answers
GIS files: Frequently Asked Questions
What are GIS files?
GIS (ERDAS 7.x GIS file) is a single-band raster format for classified data, closely related to the multi-band LAN format of the same ERDAS 7.x generation. The file opens with a fixed-size header that starts with the text HEAD74 (older files use HEADER) and records the pixel type, the number of columns and rows, and the map coordinates of the grid. Pixels are stored as 4-bit, 8-bit, or 16-bit values, so a 4-bit file can hold only 16 classes. Because the numbers are class codes, the names and display colors of the classes are not stored with the pixels but in a separate companion file, often with the .trl extension. The header also carries only limited coordinate system information, so projections are usually described only by their units. To convert to graphics, a program reads the header, unpacks the pixels, and replaces each class code with its palette color, which gives an indexed or RGB picture that can be saved as PNG, GIF, JPEG, or TIFF. Without a palette, the codes can be shown as grayscale. GeoTIFF preserves the coordinates. Supported by ERDAS IMAGINE, ArcGIS, TerrSet, Geomatica, and MiraMon.
