What are GPKG files?
GPKG is a single database file that holds maps, and under the surface it is an ordinary SQLite database with a fixed set of tables that GIS programs agree on. The header of the file carries the identifier GPKG, so a program can recognize it, and the standard requires a table named gpkg_contents that lists everything geographic in the file, a table of coordinate systems, and, for vector layers, a table named gpkg_geometry_columns that says which column holds the shapes. Vector layers are ordinary tables in which one column stores each shape in the GeoPackage binary form, which is a short header followed by the standard Well-Known Binary encoding. Raster maps are stored as pyramids of tiles, in tables that hold the tile images, as PNG or JPEG, or as WebP in an extension, together with tables that describe the tile matrix and its extent. Further tables can describe attributes without geometry, metadata, and relationships between tables. Optional extensions of the standard add spatial indexes, tiled elevation data, and related tables. Because it is a database, a GeoPackage can be queried with SQL, edited by several programs, and opened on phones, but it should not be written to by several users at the same time.
