FAQ
GPKG to KTX2 Conversion
What are GPKG files?
GPKG is the file of a GeoPackage, an open standard of the Open Geospatial Consortium for storing geographic data in a single file. Inside one .gpkg file there can be several layers of points, lines, and polygons with their attribute tables, sets of map tiles for backgrounds, and ordinary tables of data, all together with the coordinate systems and descriptions that go with them. The file is portable and can be copied or sent as it is, it works on any operating system and on phones and tablets, and it has none of the restrictions of the older Shapefile, which needs a group of files and has short field names. GeoPackage is supported by practically all current GIS programs and is often used as the main format for sharing and storing geodata.
What are KTX2 files?
KTX2 (Khronos Texture 2.0) is a container file format for GPU-ready texture data, published by the Khronos Group as the successor to the original KTX format. A single file can hold 1D, 2D, 3D, cubemap and array textures together with their full mipmap chains, stored in the memory layout expected by graphics APIs such as Vulkan, OpenGL and OpenGL ES, so the contents can be uploaded to the video card with little or no additional processing. Besides plain block-compressed data, KTX2 supports supercompression: Basis Universal (ETC1S and UASTC) allows one file to be transcoded at load time into the format the target device actually needs, while Zstandard and ZLIB simply reduce file size. The format is the texture payload used by the glTF KHR_texture_basisu extension, which makes it common in 3D assets for the web, game engines and AR applications.
