Questions & Answers
GRIB files: Frequently Asked Questions
What are GRIB files?
GRIB (GRIdded Binary) is a compact binary format in which weather forecasts and climate analyses are stored as grids of numbers. A file is a chain of independent records, and each record is one complete map of a single quantity, for instance temperature at 500 hPa or ocean wave height, for one time. Every record starts with the letters GRIB and ends with 7777, so programs can find its boundaries even in a long archive, and between these marks it carries a description of the product, a description of the grid, and the packed values. To save space, the numbers are not stored as ordinary decimals but as small integers combined with a reference value and a scale, and places without data can be flagged with a separate bitmap. Converting a GRIB file to graphics means choosing a record, restoring the real values, placing them on the grid, which may be a regular latitude and longitude net or a projected one, and painting them with a color scale. The result can be saved as PNG, JPEG, or TIFF, or as GeoTIFF to keep the coordinates. A file with many records can give many pictures. Supported by degrib, the NCAR Command Language, and Ugrib.
