Technical note

GRIB to PLT: what to expect from the conversion

Geospatial coordinates are absolute positions on the earth, and they are large: a projected easting runs to six or seven digits, while latitude and longitude are small decimals. PLT expects a drawing laid out near its own origin in millimetres or inches. The geometry itself converts correctly, but it can land tens of kilometres from 0,0, or arrive at a scale where an entire county is forty units across. Zoom to extents first, then measure one known distance before dimensioning anything. Lettering in the image is traced as shapes, not recognised as text. Every character arrives as an outline that can be scaled and edited like any other geometry, but not retyped, restyled or searched, and no font is attached to it. Titles and callouts on a scanned drawing usually have to be typed again in the PLT if they need to stay editable.

Map Data Workflow

From map data to a working drawing

Site plans, utility routes and parcel boundaries often start out as GRIB and end up in PLT. reaConverter turns the layers into drawing entities in batch, so a full project folder moves across in one run.

  • Convert every layer in a folder to PLT with the same settings
  • Go the other way too, from DWG to Shapefile, when the GIS team needs the drawings back
  • Render the same data to PDF for a quick review copy
  • Pick up new data automatically with Watch Folders, or script the job from the command line

Everything runs on your PC, which matters for cadastral, utility and client data that should not pass through an upload form.

We regularly work with PLT files from various CAD systems, and reaConverter has proven to be the most efficient solution for batch converting them into accessible formats like PDF and TIFF. Its ability to handle PLT files accurately, without losing line weights or scaling, is essential for maintaining the integrity of our technical drawings. Combined with command-line support and Watch Folder automation, it fits perfectly into our production workflow, saving hours of manual processing each week.
