How GTI and STEP differ in practice

GTI holds no pixels of its own. It is an index: a list of other raster files plus instructions for mosaicking, clipping or rescaling them, so it converts only when every file it points to is present at the path it records. A GTI copied to another machine on its own produces nothing usable. Converting to STEP renders the assembled result into one real file, which is often the whole reason to do it. GTI is made of pixels and STEP is a geometry format, so the two describe shape in fundamentally different ways. Check the result before sending it downstream: what matters is whether the output contains usable geometry or a picture placed inside a STEP container.
