What are GTI files?
GTI (Raster Tile Index) is a catalog format that builds a virtual mosaic from many raster files, called tiles, without copying their pixels. The catalog is a vector layer in which every record holds the location of one tile, in a field named location by default, and a polygon outlining the area it covers. It can be saved as a GeoPackage with the .gti.gpkg extension, as a FlatGeobuf with the .gti.fgb extension, or as a short XML file with the .gti extension that points to such a layer and adds details, such as the resolution, the extent, the coordinate system, the data type, and the number of bands. The tiles themselves can be in different raster formats, all outlines must use the same coordinate system, and relative paths are counted from the folder of the index. To produce graphics, a program reads the catalog, selects the tiles that touch the requested area, combines them into one image, and treats transparent or masked pixels so that overlapping tiles blend correctly. The result can be saved as one PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or GeoTIFF file, or shown on screen at any scale. Because only the index is converted, the original tiles must stay available.
