GVB (NTv2 Datum Grid Shift) is a binary grid file with the structure of the NTv2 standard, used for high-accuracy conversion between two horizontal datums. The file begins with an overview block that names the source and target datums, the unit of the shifts, which is normally seconds of arc, and the number of sub-grids. Every sub-grid carries a short header with its name, boundaries, and spacing in latitude and longitude, followed by the grid records. Each record holds the shift in latitude and in longitude, and often their accuracy. Several sub-grids can lie side by side or inside one another, so that a detailed area is covered by a finer net than its surroundings. To find the correction at a given location, a program takes the four nearest grid points and interpolates between them. Because the values describe a movement of coordinates, they can be turned into a picture: a program reads the points, computes the size of the shift at each of them, and paints the grid with a color scale. Latitude, longitude, and accuracy can also be exported as separate layers. The result can be saved as PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or GeoTIFF.
