What are GXF files?
GXF (Geosoft Grid eXchange Format) is a plain-text format that describes a grid through labeled blocks. Each block starts with a line that has the # character followed by an upper-case label, for example #POINTS for the number of points in a row, #ROWS for the number of rows, and #GRID, which is always last and introduces the values. These three labels are the only required ones, while optional labels tell where the grid starts, how far apart its points and rows are, how it is rotated, and which map projection and units it uses. Lines are limited to 80 characters, and a backslash at the end of a line continues it on the next one. Values are listed row by row, and cells without data are replaced by a special dummy value. To convert a GXF file to graphics, a program reads the labels first, builds the grid from the values, makes dummy cells transparent, and paints the rest with a color scale, which gives a typical map of a geophysical field or a terrain surface.
