What are HDF files?
HDF (Hierarchical Data Format Release 4) is a self-describing container in which data and the description of the data live in one file. The usual content of a satellite product is a set of scientific data sets, each of them an array with its own name, dimensions, units, and calibration information, and the file can also hold raster images, palettes, tables, and text notes. In the HDF-EOS variant used for NASA products, extra metadata describes how the arrays are tied to the surface of the Earth, either as a regular grid, as a swath that follows the track of the satellite, or as separate points, and this is why an .hdf file can carry coordinates for every pixel. Three bands of the same product can be combined into an RGB picture. The result can be saved as PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or GeoTIFF, where the location information is preserved.
