How HDF and GBR differ in practice

Geospatial coordinates are absolute positions on the earth, and they are large: a projected easting runs to six or seven digits, while latitude and longitude are small decimals. GBR expects a drawing laid out near its own origin in millimetres or inches. The geometry itself converts correctly, but it can land tens of kilometres from 0,0, or arrive at a scale where an entire county is forty units across. Zoom to extents first, then measure one known distance before dimensioning anything. Lettering in the image is traced as shapes, not recognised as text. Every character arrives as an outline that can be scaled and edited like any other geometry, but not retyped, restyled or searched, and no font is attached to it. Titles and callouts on a scanned drawing usually have to be typed again in the GBR if they need to stay editable.

HDF is the most common extension of files in the Hierarchical Data Format, Release 4, a container for scientific data developed at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications and now supported by The HDF Group. It is best known from satellite remote sensing: NASA's Earth Observing System adopted it in 1993, and instruments aboard the Terra and Aqua satellites, such as MODIS and ASTER, delivered their products in this form. One file may hold many layers, for example several spectral channels, a quality mask, and the coordinates of every pixel, along with notes that explain them.
