What are HF2 files?
HF2 (heightfield raster) stores a grid of elevations in a way that makes the file small while letting the author decide how exact the heights must be. Instead of writing each height in full, the format records the difference between neighboring cells, which are usually close in value, and rounds heights to a chosen vertical precision. A coarser step gives a smaller file at the cost of accuracy, and the finest supported step is about one four-billionth of the height range. The grid is cut into square tiles, 256 cells wide by default, and every tile keeps its own scale and offset, so flat and mountainous regions are stored efficiently. The tile size does not have to divide the map size, and edge tiles are simply shorter. A short header comes first and may be followed by extended blocks, which can carry the map location. The whole file can be compressed with gzip and saved as .hfz or .hf2.gz. To convert it to graphics, a program decodes the tiles into elevations and turns them into a grayscale heightmap, a colored elevation map, or a shaded relief picture.
