What are ILI files?
ILI is a plain-text description of a data model, written in the INTERLIS language, which says what a data set is allowed to contain. A model is split into topics, which hold classes of objects with their attributes, domains such as lists of allowed values or ranges of numbers, and the types of geometry, for instance points, lines, and areas with a stated coordinate system. In INTERLIS 2, the language also lets the author state consistency rules and relations between classes, and a model can be extended by other models, as cantons in Switzerland extend the federal model of official surveying. The data that follow the model are kept in separate files: INTERLIS 1 uses a text transfer file with the .itf extension, and INTERLIS 2 uses an XML file with the .xtf extension. The two must match, so a data delivery needs the transfer file and its model, or an unambiguous reference to it, and many models are published in online repositories. Data in INTERLIS 1 can be converted to INTERLIS 2 without loss, but not the other way round. The current version is INTERLIS 2.4, which is aligned with the eCH-0031 standard.
