What are JML files?
JML is a text file in XML form that holds one map layer, with every object written as a geometry together with its attributes. At the very beginning, the file declares the columns of the attribute table, giving the name and the type of each, which can be an integer, a decimal number, a text string, a date, or an object, and the geometries then follow in the GML style. This is the main difference from ordinary GML, in which the field definitions live in a separate schema. A layer in one file may mix geometry types, so points, lines, and polygons can sit together, unlike in a Shapefile, where a file holds only one kind. There is no formal specification of the format, and the files written by OpenJUMP are always in UTF-8 encoding. An optional text attribute named R_G_B stores the color of an object, which lets a layer keep a simple appearance when it is saved. Newer versions can also record the coordinate system number in the file. OpenJUMP can read JML files directly from a zip archive, and a layer that mixes geometry types has to be split into separate layers before it is saved to a Shapefile. Supported by OpenJUMP.
