FAQ
JML to CIT Conversion
What are JML files?
JML is the native vector format of OpenJUMP, a free GIS written in Java. The name stands for JUMP Geographic Markup Language, and the file is a text document in XML that stores one map layer: its points, lines, and polygons, together with a table of attributes for each object, such as names, numbers, and dates. It is a simplified variant of the GML standard, with the difference that the description of the attribute fields is placed at the beginning of the file itself, so the file can be opened without any extra template or schema. OpenJUMP grew out of JUMP, a project of Vivid Solutions, the authors of the widely used geometry library JTS, and JML files are still the easiest way to save and share layers between OpenJUMP users.
What are CIT files?
A CIT file represents a black-and-white raster image created using an Intergraph Security, Government and Infrastructure (SG&I) piece of software. Until a few years ago, Intergraph was considered one of largest software developers in the world, and is part of Hexagon AB since 2010. The company provides IT services all over the world to governments and businesses, and apart from the SG&I division it also includes one called Process, Power & Marine (PP&M) and another called Hexagon Geospatial.
