What are KAR files?
KAR files are Standard MIDI Files, usually of format 1, that carry the words of a song together with its notes, so the music can be shown as a score with the lyrics aligned under the melody. The notes are stored as in any MIDI file, with their pitch, length, and velocity, the tempo, and the time signature. The lyrics are stored as text events. The first track begins with service events that start with an at sign: @KMIDI KARAOKE FILE marks the file as karaoke, @V gives the version, @I carries information, @L the language, and @T the title and other credits. The next track holds the words cut into syllables, each placed at the moment when it is sung, with a forward slash starting a new line and a backslash clearing the screen. Some files use the lyric meta events defined in the MIDI file specification instead of text events. The format was developed by Tune 1000 for Soft Karaoke in 1993 and was never approved by the MIDI Manufacturers Association. Notation programs such as MidiIllustrator can turn Karaoke files into sheet music and lead sheets with lyrics.
