What are LAS files?
LAS (Latitude Seconds) is the file extension of grids used by NADCON, the North American Datum Conversion tool of the U.S. National Geodetic Survey (NGS), to convert coordinates between older and newer datums, in particular from NAD27 to NAD83. It stores, for an area covered by a regular net of points, how many seconds of arc the latitude of each point has to be moved. Longitude has its own companion file with the .los extension (Longitude Seconds), and the two always work as a pair. Separate pairs exist for the conterminous United States, Alaska, Hawaii, and other regions. The same extension is also used by LiDAR point cloud files, which are unrelated, so the context of the file matters.
What are AVIF files?
AVIF is a new image format launched at the end of 2020. AV1 Image File Format was developed by the Alliance for Open Media in collaboration with Netflix, Google and Cisco. This format was created to be an open-sourced and royalty-free image format with a super-compression efficiency. Multiple graphics compression tests show that the .avif format outperforms the JPEG, PNG and WebP image formats for its image quality to compressed file size ratio.
