What are LAS files?
LAS (NADCON Datum Grid Shift) is a file of latitude corrections that is used together with a longitude file with the .los extension. Both files describe the same net of points over a region, with the shift in seconds of arc stored for every point, and a program finds the shift for a location by interpolating between the neighboring points, usually in a straight line between them. Together, they convert coordinates from NAD27 to NAD83, and a related set of files handles the move from NAD83 to the High Accuracy Reference Network. The files are binary and come from a time when this was done on early PC systems, so their layout is a mix of text and binary information with a short header at the beginning. Text versions with the .laa and .loa extensions can be produced with the NGS utility NADGRD. Western longitudes are stored as negative numbers. Newer NADCON 5.0 grids use the .b format instead. A LAS grid is not a picture, but it can be shown as one: a program reads the values, finds the size of the shift at each point, and paints the grid with a color scale to show where the datums differ most.
