What are LAS files?
LAS (Latitude Seconds) is the file extension of grids used by NADCON, the North American Datum Conversion tool of the U.S. National Geodetic Survey (NGS), to convert coordinates between older and newer datums, in particular from NAD27 to NAD83. It stores, for an area covered by a regular net of points, how many seconds of arc the latitude of each point has to be moved. Longitude has its own companion file with the .los extension (Longitude Seconds), and the two always work as a pair. Separate pairs exist for the conterminous United States, Alaska, Hawaii, and other regions. The same extension is also used by LiDAR point cloud files, which are unrelated, so the context of the file matters.
What are RAD files?
The RAD format is supported by a ray tracing application called Radiance, which contains several tools that support lighting simulation and measuring light levels. RAD files are often used in architectural project to design and evaluate lighting systems. Apart from lighting features, they can also save objects and materials, and they serve as input for OCT files that facilitate the scene rendering.
