What are LAS files?
LAS (Latitude Seconds) is the file extension of grids used by NADCON, the North American Datum Conversion tool of the U.S. National Geodetic Survey (NGS), to convert coordinates between older and newer datums, in particular from NAD27 to NAD83. It stores, for an area covered by a regular net of points, how many seconds of arc the latitude of each point has to be moved. Longitude has its own companion file with the .los extension (Longitude Seconds), and the two always work as a pair. Separate pairs exist for the conterminous United States, Alaska, Hawaii, and other regions. The same extension is also used by LiDAR point cloud files, which are unrelated, so the context of the file matters.
What are DWG files?
DWG (which stands for "Drawing") is a proprietary format of AutoCAD, a program widely used for creating engineering and architectural projects. The format is also a default extension used by several other computer-aided design (CAD) pieces of software, including IntelliCAD, Caddie or DraftSight. DWG files contain complex design structures including several layers, which can be 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional.
