What are MBTILES files?
MBTILES is a SQLite database file whose structure is fixed by a short specification, and in practice it is a table of tiles with a few lines of description. The tiles table has four columns: the zoom level, the tile column, the tile row, and the tile data as a binary blob, and a unique index on the first three makes lookups fast. A second table, called metadata, holds pairs of names and values, among which the name of the tileset and the format of the tiles are required, while the bounds, the center, the minimum and maximum zoom levels, the attribution, and the description are suggested. The format value is png, jpg, or webp for images, or pbf for vector tiles, which are Mapbox Vector Tiles compressed with gzip. Rows are numbered in the Tile Map Service way, with row zero at the bottom of the map, which is the opposite of the XYZ scheme used by most web maps, so a program has to flip the row when it converts between the two. An optional pair of tables can hold interaction data for UTFGrid. The current version of the specification is 1.3.
