MEM is the file extension of a digital elevation model of Japan produced by the Geographical Survey Institute of Japan, now the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan (GSI), the national mapping agency. A file of this type covers a part of the country with a regular net of points, and each point holds the height of the ground above the Japanese vertical reference, which is based on the mean sea level of Tokyo Bay. The data were derived from the topographic maps of the Institute, and the older series came with grid spacings such as 50 meters. Coordinates are given in latitude and longitude on the Tokyo datum, the national system that was in use before the switch to modern satellite-based systems. Such files are used for terrain analysis, mapping, and visualization of Japan.
