What are NC4 files?
NC4 is a file extension used for NetCDF-4, the fourth generation of the Network Common Data Form, a format for storing scientific data that is maintained by Unidata at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research. It is widely used for weather, climate, ocean, and satellite data, where measurements are organized as multidimensional arrays, for example temperature at a grid of locations over time. A file describes itself: it holds the data together with names, units, and notes on what they mean. NetCDF-4 appeared in 2008 and uses the HDF5 format underneath, which allows data to be compressed and grouped in folders inside the file. Although the official recommendation is to use the .nc extension for all versions, some data providers choose .nc4 to mark the newer format.
