What are OSM files?
OSM is a text file with a piece of the OpenStreetMap database, in which the whole map is built from three kinds of objects. A node is a single point with a latitude and a longitude on the WGS 84 datum. A way is an ordered list of at least two node references, and it can describe a road, a river, or, when it closes on itself, a building or another area, although areas are recognized only by the tags they carry. A relation is a group of nodes, ways, or other relations, each with a role such as outer or inner for the parts of a polygon with holes, and it is used for bus routes, boundaries, and similar complex objects. Every object can have any number of tags, which are free pairs of a key and a value, such as highway and residential, and there is no fixed schema, only conventions agreed by the community. The file has a root element with the version of the interface, 0.6, and the generator, usually a bounds element with the downloaded area, and then the nodes, the ways, and the relations in exactly that order. Each object also records its identifier, version, the time of the last edit, the changeset, and the user who made it. Files saved by the editor JOSM use the same structure but may add an action attribute to mark changes. Supported by JOSM and FME.
