What are PMTILES files?
PMTILES is an archive of map tiles in a single file, arranged so that a program can find any tile with just a few small downloads. The file begins with a header of exactly 127 bytes, which gives the position and size of each section, the type of the tiles, and the compression used, followed by a root directory, a block of metadata in JSON, optional leaf directories, and then the tile data. A directory entry tells where a tile, or a run of identical tiles, or a leaf directory is found in the file. The root directory is kept small, so that the header and root together stay within 16 KiB and arrive in the very first request. Tiles are not addressed by zoom, column, and row but by a single number along a Hilbert curve, which places tiles that are neighbors on the map close to each other in the file, so a view of the map needs only a few contiguous pieces. If many tiles are byte-for-byte identical, such as empty ocean, they are stored only once. A client reads a PMTiles file on a web server through HTTP range requests and needs no tile server at all, and the same file can be read locally. The current version is 3, and files can be made from MBTiles with a conversion tool. Supported by the official pmtiles tool and by MapLibre.
