Technical note

PPM to DWG: what carries over and what does not

PPM is made of pixels and DWG stores geometry, so the conversion traces the image into real lines, arcs and polylines. The result is editable in CAD: entities can be selected, snapped to and measured, rather than a bitmap wrapped inside a DWG container, which is what a viewer or a lightweight converter usually produces. It is still derived geometry, so expect contours rather than a structured drawing. Dimensions, blocks and meaningful layer names were never in the PPM to begin with. Lettering in the image is traced as shapes, not recognised as text. Every character arrives as an outline that can be scaled and edited like any other geometry, but not retyped, restyled or searched, and no font is attached to it. Titles and callouts on a scanned drawing usually have to be typed again in the DWG if they need to stay editable.
