REL is the metadata file of the MiraMon raster format. MiraMon is a geographic information system and remote sensing program developed in Catalonia at CREAF, a research center linked to the Autonomous University of Barcelona. A MiraMon raster is stored in two kinds of files: the image data in one or several .img files, and a text file whose name ends in I.rel, which describes how to read them. It tells how many rows and columns the image has, what the pixel values are, how the bands are named, how the picture is compressed, where it lies on the Earth, and how it should be colored by default. It can also hold information about the origin and quality of the data. A single .rel file can tie together a whole multiband image, such as a satellite scene.
What are PGM files?
The PGM or Portable Graymap format is part of a package of open source graphics programs called Netpbm. Other Netpbm formats include PPM (Portable Pixmap) and PBM (Portable Bitmap), also known under the collective name of PNM (Portable Anymap). A PGM file includes a grayscale image, can work on a UNIX platform, as well as on Windows or Mac OS X, and can render a scope of up to 255 grayscale colors.
