What are RTF files?
RTF is a text-based format in which the formatting is written as readable commands inside the text. A file always begins with the characters {\rtf1, and the whole document is a group enclosed in braces. Inside, the backslash starts a control word, such as \b for bold, \i for italic, \fs24 for a 12-point font, or \par for the end of a paragraph, and nested groups limit the area where a setting applies, for example a font table, a color table, a header, or a footnote. A standard RTF file consists only of 7-bit ASCII characters, so letters outside this range are written as escape sequences, as \'hh codes or as \u Unicode numbers, and pictures are written as hexadecimal text. The format appeared with Word 3.0 for the Macintosh and was developed by Microsoft up to version 1.9.1 in 2008, and Unicode support was added in version 1.5 in 1997. The media types are application/rtf and text/rtf. Because the file is plain text, it can be viewed in any text editor, but it grows large when it holds many pictures.
