What are SBS files?
SBS is the Substance Source file, also called a Substance 3D package, which is the native, editable format of Adobe Substance 3D Designer. It is a container for the resources of a project: Substance graphs, which are node-based generators of textures, functions, bitmap and 3D scene resources that the graphs use, dependencies on other packages, metadata, and the connections and parameter values of every node. Unlike an ordinary image, a graph can expose parameters, such as the amount of dust on an object or the color of a surface, and the creator decides which of them the user of the material will be able to change. A material built mostly from procedural nodes needs no stored pixels, so the file stays small, while bitmaps can be embedded or linked when the design needs them. The file is used to author procedural PBR materials, and also to build custom filters and generators for Substance 3D Painter. It is proprietary and opens only in Substance 3D Designer. The SBS file is not meant for delivery to other programs: for that, the package is published as a compiled SBSAR archive, which keeps the exposed parameters but not the editable graph.
