What are SIGDEM files?
SIGDEM (Scaled Integer Gridded DEM) is a binary elevation grid that stores heights as scaled integers. The file starts with a header of 132 bytes whose first six characters are SIGDEM, followed by the version, the EPSG number of the coordinate system, which is 0 when no number exists and the projection must be supplied in a separate .prj file, the offsets and scale factors for x, y, and z, and the extent and the number of columns and rows. Each cell then holds a 32-bit integer, and the real height is calculated as the offset plus the stored value divided by the scale, which makes it possible to keep, for example, millimeter precision without floating-point numbers. Empty cells hold the smallest possible 32-bit value. All numbers are big-endian. The coordinates of a cell refer to its lower-left corner, not to its center as in many other DEM formats, and this must be taken into account when the grid is combined with others. To convert a SIGDEM file to graphics, a program reads the header, converts the integers to heights with the scale and offset, marks the empty cells as transparent, and builds a grayscale heightmap, a colored elevation map, or a shaded relief picture.
