What are SLF files?
SLF is a binary file with a mesh of points and triangles and the values that a water flow simulation computed at those points, one set for each moment in time. It is written as a sequence of Fortran-style records, each surrounded by its length, and the numbers are either in single precision, which is the usual case, or in double precision, with the byte order of the machine that wrote it. At the beginning stands a title of 80 characters, then the number of variables with their names and units, such as water depth, velocity components, or elevation, and a list of ten integer parameters. Then come the number of elements and points, the connectivity table that tells which points form each triangle, a table that marks the boundary points, and the coordinates of all the points. After this header, the file contains one block for every time step, with the time and then the values of each variable at all mesh points. In a three-dimensional model, points are stacked in vertical layers, and the results are written layer by layer. The same format is used for geometry files, results files, and files with the positions of drifting particles, which are stored as a degenerate mesh.
