How SVS and JPG differ in practice

SVS is a pyramidal whole-slide image: one file carries the same scanned slide at several magnifications, and the largest level can run past 100,000 pixels on a side. JPG holds a single flat picture at one resolution. That makes the magnification the decisive choice, because there is no sensible original size to fall back on here: the full-resolution level of a slide scan is larger than most image software will open at all. SVS and JPG both compress by discarding data, so this is a re-encode rather than a copy. The output is built from already-compressed pixels, and the artefacts of the first encode are carried into the second. Use a high quality setting, and convert from the original whenever you still have it.
