What are TPKX files?
TPKX (Esri Tile Package, Compact Cache V2) is a compressed archive with a simple, open structure that holds a raster tile cache. Inside the archive are a small iteminfo.json file, a root.json file, a thumbnail picture, and a folder named tile. The root.json file describes the cache: its tiling scheme, the image format of the tiles, the tile size, the zoom levels with their resolutions, and the full and initial extents. The tile folder holds one subfolder per level of detail, and each subfolder contains .bundle files, in which many tiles are grouped. A bundle usually holds a block of 128 by 128 tiles, so there are far fewer files than tiles, and a tile is found through a table of offsets and sizes at the start of the bundle. The older .tpk format used the first version of this storage method. To convert a TPKX package to graphics, a program reads root.json, chooses a zoom level, extracts the tiles of that level from the bundles, decodes them as JPEG or PNG, and joins them into one image of the chosen area. The result can be saved as PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or GeoTIFF with coordinates. Choosing a level with less detail keeps the picture small.
