VRT to AI: what to expect from the conversion

VRT holds no pixels of its own. It is an index: a list of other raster files plus instructions for mosaicking, clipping or rescaling them, so it converts only when every file it points to is present at the path it records. A VRT copied to another machine on its own produces nothing usable. Converting to AI renders the assembled result into one real file, which is often the whole reason to do it. Lettering in the image is traced as shapes, not recognised as text. Every character arrives as an outline that can be scaled and edited like any other geometry, but not retyped, restyled or searched, and no font is attached to it. Titles and callouts on a scanned drawing usually have to be typed again in the AI if they need to stay editable.
