Questions & Answers
VRT files: Frequently Asked Questions
What are VRT files?
VRT (Virtual Raster) is an XML document that builds a virtual raster from other files. The root element, VRTDataset, gives the size of the raster and may carry the coordinate system, the georeference, control points, metadata, and a mask. Inside it, every band is described by a VRTRasterBand element with its data type, an optional description and category names, and an optional offset and scale for converting stored values to real ones. The pixels of a band come from sources: a simple source names the file and band to read and maps a rectangle of the source onto a rectangle of the virtual image, and a complex source adds rescaling, an offset, or a lookup table for the values. With these elements a single file can express a mosaic, a window cut from a large picture, a selection or reordering of bands, and even reprojection and pansharpening. A VRT can also describe a raw binary raster, for which only the offsets of the image, the pixels, and the lines are given. To convert a VRT file to graphics, a program reads the XML, fetches the needed parts of the source files, applies the described scaling, and assembles the picture. The result can be saved as PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or GeoTIFF with coordinates. Because only the description is stored, the source files must remain in place. Supported by ProRaster.
