X10 is a plain-text file made of tables, in a layout similar to CSV files, which public transport systems use to exchange timetable and network data. Each table in a file is introduced by a set of lines that start with a command word followed by a semicolon. The tbl line names the table, the atr line lists the names of the columns, and the frm line gives the format of each column, such as text with a stated length or a number with a stated number of digits. Each row of data is a line that starts with rec, and the table ends with an end line that states how many rows it should contain, which lets a reader check the data. The file also has a chs line that tells the character set, which is either plain ASCII or ISO 8859-1, and further header lines for the version. The meaning of the tables comes from the VDV 452 data model for the route network and timetable interface, which defines tables such as stops, stopping points, lines and their routes, journeys, and connections between them. The same layout is used by the Austrian INTREST format for the official open street graph. Because the structure is regular, such files can be read and written by programs of different manufacturers, and files for a whole network can be very large.
