Questions & Answers
XLTM documents: Frequently Asked Questions
What are XLTM files?
XLTM is the macro-enabled form of the XLTX template, with the letter m showing that the file may contain macros. Its package is a ZIP archive with the XML parts of a workbook template, namely the sheets, the styles, the formulas, and the shared strings, and with a VBA project that holds the code, and it can also store Excel 4.0 macro sheets. It is the format for templates in which the author wants automation to be part of the design, such as buttons that import data, check the entries, or build a report. When a new workbook is created from the template, Excel opens a copy in which the macros are available, and if the copy is saved as XLSX, the macros are not kept, so it must be saved as XLSM to preserve them. The macros are disabled by default, and the user has to enable them, so files of this type should come only from trusted sources. The media type is application/vnd.ms-excel.template.macroEnabled.12. Supported by Microsoft Excel.
